Wisdom Tooth Extraction Vs. Orthodontic Extraction – Know the difference

Orthodontic Extractions – Wisdom Tooth Extraction Vs. Orthodontic Extraction

They are part of the orthodontic treatment planning to achieve proper teeth alignment and a correct bite. The primary goal is to create sufficient space within the mouth, allowing the remaining teeth to shift and align correctly during braces treatment or clear aligners therapy.

The process begins with a complete dental evaluation by our experts at The Advanced Dental Clinic East Delhi. It may involve dental X-rays and thoroughly examining the patient’s oral condition. Based on the assessment, specific teeth are strategically selected for extraction. Usually, premolars, the teeth between the molars and canines, are the most commonly removed during orthodontic extractions.

Overcrowding

If there isn’t enough space in the dental arches for teeth to align correctly, orthodontic extractions can create room for other teeth to shift into their desired positions.

Misaligned Bite

Orthodontic extractions can help address bite issues by repositioning the teeth and achieving a more balanced bite.

Wisdom Tooth Extractions – Wisdom Tooth Extraction Vs Orthodontic Extraction

Wisdom tooth extractions, also known as third molar extractions, involve the removal of the third molars located at the back of the mouth. Wisdom teeth emerge last, typically 18-24 years. Wisdom teeth may not cause problems in some people but may cause immense pain in others. Wisdom tooth extractions are only indicated if we notice that the third molar is causing problems to the adjacent teeth or recurrent pain is involved. Wisdom teeth may remain in the jawbone if they do not have enough room to grow correctly. This can lead to the teeth getting stuck partially or fully beneath the gum line, potentially causing pain, swelling, and infection.

Cysts or Tumors

Cysts or tumors may develop around impacted wisdom teeth, leading to more severe complications.

To address these issues and prevent potential dental problems, we at The Advanced Dental Clinic East Delhi often recommend the removal of problematic wisdom teeth. Wisdom tooth extractions can be classified as either simple or surgical, depending on the position and condition of the teeth. Local anesthesia is commonly used to numb the area during the extraction procedure.

Simple wisdom tooth extractions are performed when the teeth are visible in the mouth. Conversely, surgical wisdom tooth extractions are necessary when the teeth are impacted, not fully erupted, or causing significant complications and require bone removal.

Summary of Wisdom Tooth Extraction Vs. Orthodontic Extraction

Purpose

Orthodontic Extractions

The specific tooth is strategically removed to create space and facilitate proper alignment during orthodontic treatment.

Wisdom Tooth Extractions

The concerned wisdom tooth or the third molar is removed, causing recurrent pain and other dental issues.

Teeth Involved

Orthodontic Extractions

Premolars are more commonly chosen to be removed for orthodontic reasons

Wisdom Tooth Extractions

Third molars, also known as wisdom teeth. They can be present in both upper and lower jaws. However, lower jaw wisdom teeth extractions are more common.

Type of extraction and healing

Orthodontic extraction

The tooth planned for removal is extracted as atraumatically as possible to preserve the bone and the surrounding tissues. The healing of the extraction socket is rapid in such cases.

Wisdom tooth extraction

The impacted third molars are removed after removing the overlying bone. The healing may take some time, depending upon the severity of the case. If there is a lot of bone removal, it may take months for the new bone formation to occur.
