Understand the difference – Wisdom Tooth Surgery Vs. Regular Tooth Extraction

Understand the difference – Wisdom Tooth Surgery Vs. Regular Tooth Extraction

Preserving a natural tooth is the primary aim of every dentist. In some instances, when saving the tooth is not feasible, tooth extraction becomes necessary. Some common conditions where extraction is the best option are extensive tooth decay, severe dental trauma, and severe infection. Regular tooth extraction is performed in such cases to remove the tooth. Another common type of extraction is wisdom tooth extraction, where the third molars that are impacted or partially erupted are removed. Wisdom tooth removal is not indicated in all cases. Our team at The Advanced Dental Clinic East Delhi suggests wisdom tooth removal when the third molar is causing damage to the adjacent teeth, or there are chances of developing infection around it or recurrent pain associated with the involved tooth.

Regular Tooth Extraction -Wisdom Tooth Surgery Vs. Regular Tooth Extraction

A simple extraction is a relatively simple procedure often performed by general dentists. This type of extraction is suitable for the fully visible teeth in the mouth and not hidden beneath the gums. Although you may feel the pressure of pulling the tooth during the extraction, the process is entirely painless. Simple extractions are commonly used for decayed, broken, or weak teeth that can be easily grasped with dental forceps. One of the significant advantages of simple extraction is the minimal recovery time. Most people recover within a couple of days.

Wisdom Tooth Surgery – Wisdom Tooth Surgery Vs. Regular Tooth Extraction

A wisdom tooth extraction is a more complex procedure for teeth not fully visible in the mouth, such as impacted wisdom teeth. It involves an incision into the tissue surrounding the tooth to gain access for extraction. Sometimes, the surgeon may need to lift the soft tissues or use tools to remove the adjacent jawbone to reach the tooth. The division of the tooth may also be necessary for removal to avoid breakage.

How do they differ? – Wisdom Tooth Surgery Vs. Regular Tooth Extraction

Based on the Location of the tooth

Regular extraction

Involves removing a decayed, damaged, or infected tooth that is fully erupted and visible in the mouth. It can involve any tooth in the mouth.

Wisdom tooth extraction

Involves removing one or more third molars (wisdom teeth) located at the back of the mouth and often impacted or partially erupted. It can be done in upper and lower jaw both; however, lower jaw impaction is more common.

Based on Purpose

Regular extraction

Done to address various dental issues, such as severe tooth decay, tooth fractures, or root canal treatment failures where it is impossible to save the tooth.

Wisdom tooth extraction

Typically performed to resolve problems related to impacted wisdom teeth, which can cause pain, misalignment, or damage to the adjacent teeth.

Based on Timing

Regular extraction

It can be done whenever a problem arises with a tooth. There is no specific timing for regular extraction.

Wisdom tooth extraction

Usually performed during early adulthood when wisdom teeth erupt or become problematic.

Based on Complexity

Regular extraction

It is generally less complex and straightforward since the targeted tooth is fully visible and is easy to hold.

Wisdom tooth extraction

Often more complex and may require surgical intervention, significantly when the tooth is impacted or positioned deep within the jawbone.

Based on Post-operative recovery

Regular extraction

Tends to have a shorter recovery period.

Wisdom tooth extraction

Recovery from surgical extraction generally requires more extensive aftercare, and people should follow the instructions to ensure proper healing.
